The Importance of Recombobulation

Recombobulation Area By almost any measure, flying is an ordeal and I greatly appreciate any sign of civility in an experience that is increasingly non-civilized. Recently I completed a client project in Milwaukee and was preparing to fly home. After passing through security toward my gate, while gathering up my briefcase, overcoat, hat, shoes, and carry-on, I noticed a sign, “Recombobulation Area”.

According to the Urban Dictionary, recombobulation means 1) Something being put back the way it was, or into proper working order; 2) Gathering one’s thoughts or composure.

I suspect that most of us, travelers or not, need periodic periods of recombobulation. We hear and read daily about the tough economic times we are in. Unfortunately, tough economic times often spell tough emotional times. Our organizations and people that inhabit them are under great stress. Amidst this it is imperative that we take a breath, pause, and perhaps reboot.

Of course, recombobulation means more than us as individuals. I think it is important for our organizations to recombobulate. While our organizations are being pressed, they are also doing many things well. We are still recruiting students. We are still offering great educational experiences. We are still attracting donors who support our mission and vision. We may unravel a bit at the fringes but all in all, our core is still sound.
