Smashing Social Media Tips 2010: I

1. The Well is still a social network worth looking into, especially for slightly older folks who are looking for substance (might be good for nontraditional or graduate students).

2. blogscope.net is a fairly recent and very good tool for tracking blogs and visualizing results.

3. How many of you are using sharethis.com, a great way to empower community members in your social networks to share your content elsewhere on the social web? Pretty common on non-academic blogs… I see only a few out there on college and university sites and social platforms.

4. Here’s an old fashioned idea inspired by Shiv Singh, VP and social media lead at Razorfish: put customer reviews (student testimonials) actually on your product (the walls of your admissions office, the sides of campus buildings, chalked on your sidewalks).

5. Here’s a variation on #4: put your tweetstream up on the flat-screen display in your admissions office (or whatever you’re using).

6.Transform your press releases into social media press releases complete with tagging, tracking, and RSS feeds.

7. See what you can do with a do-it-yourself Ning network.

8. Use the twitter search engine to find out if people are talking about your institution. You can also use One Riot.

9. Find key influencers on Twitter.

10. If you’re a business school, think about using a corporate blogging-style strategy like many Fortune 500 companies are currently doing. Check out the IBM, Lenovo, and Dell blogs.

1. If you really want to get good at using social media to achieve your marketing goals, pay close attention to what major nonprofit fundraisers are doing. For example, Epic Change.

12. Good social media listening tools: Collecta, Mahalo, Board Reader.

13. Blog Lines…. nuff said.

14. For those in the college and university advancement world: think about transforming your giving societies into social networks.

15. Post Rank is a great tool for finding blogs worth reading.

Okay, I’m opening this up to everyone. Anyone got a great tip or two they’d like to share?
